On Thursday, July 29 we hosted a live digital event, Rethinking urban roadways: Post-pandemic prioritization of space.
Our cities, comprised of extensive systems of transportation, sanitation, utilities, and communication, have largely been designed to prioritize efficiency and economy. Now, we are questioning if past design decisions meet the demands of our changing world. The changes necessitated by the pandemic and the past years’ social and political disruption have instigated a lasting shift in priority, creating an opportunity to step back and reflect — and to consider livability, especially as it relates to the use and influence of our streets and public places.
Roadway designs are now being reconsidered through the lens of sustainable development; the balance between public and private space; and the importance of physical and social connectivity, diversity, safety, and equitable opportunity. Join us for a conversation on where and how to start rethinking our urban roadways.
