The last year offered many opportunities for action in the face of the interconnected challenges of climate change, social inequity, and biodiversity loss. It was also a time of geo-political conflict and economic uncertainty, adding complexity to how we respond. Arup has been working to focus on what matters most — collaborating with each other, our clients, and our partners to plan, design, and build a sustainable future.
I am excited to share our latest annual report which showcases some of the pioneering collaborations we have undertaken in the Americas over the past year. These include Boston’s Green Line Extension, a new rail link forecast to add nearly 50,000 more daily trips, bringing communities closer together and improving commutes; the Silicon Valley Clean Water Gravity Pipeline, a new 5.3km-long, 4.2m diameter tunnel that improves the resilience of the water infrastructure and protects the San Francisco Bay; and Arup’s collaboration with Evergreen to create Climate Ready Schools in Canada.
Pushing ourselves to see problems in their broadest context requires steadfast focus and personal energy, and can only be achieved through collaboration with one another. I look forward to continuing to work with you all to shape a better world.

COP27 and COP15 arrived amidst major shifts in climate and biodiversity policy. These global events sparked important conversations with climate action partners and renewed our dedication to driving positive change. We announced our international dataset of whole life carbon emissions for buildings and launched the first cold climate Sponge City Snapshot for the city of Montréal with Toronto’s Snapshot to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Building on our partnership with The Climate Registry following Climate Week NYC and COP27, we are now looking ahead to the Climate Leadership Conference (CLC) in Los Angeles this May. To kick off the event, Arup hosted the Countdown to CLC: Networking Reception, which included remarks from leading climate changemakers Lauren Faber O’Connor and Nancy Sutley. As spring approaches, we hope you will join us to continue these critical conversations by registering to attend CLC.

The journey to decarbonization continues with the recent launch of the Toward Sustainable Fleet Transitions report, published in partnership with global renewable energy leader Enel. The study provides an accessible roadmap that outlines how to catalyze, streamline, and accelerate sustainable fleet transitions. Putting ideas to action, the recent opening of the Brookville Smart Energy Bus Depot marked the first microgrid to power electric buses in the Washington region. As part of a public-private partnership with Montgomery County, Arup was engaged by AlphaStruxure for detailed engineering to upgrade the existing bus facility's site infrastructure for vehicle electrification and microgrid operations.
